Quote

Management is a real thing, a technical matter. But it can be controlled by labor just as well as by capital. Capital itself is simply the useful residue of the work of past laborers, and it could belong to everyone as well as to a few. There is no reason why a tiny nobility should own the capital, and everyone else therefore be in service to them. There is no reason they should give us a living wage and take all the rest that we produce.

Book Review: Sara by Garth Ennis

Wait… wait… wait…
Patience is the hunter’s greatest virtue. Sara hunts Nazis on the Eastern Front.
Garth Ennis knows how to write a war story and this is one of his best. It opens strong and never lets up. The tension ebbs and flows but never disappears.
The story is not only of Sara on the hunt and killing, but it also shows her life back on the camp, among the other women in her unit. This is a story comprised mainly of women, the men just have walk on roles. Slowly Ennis reveals Sara’s story: why she fights, why she’s losing her faith, why she’s the best.
Epting’s art is very good; clean and clear. Even in the biggest battle sequences, you always know what’s going on, where everybody is.
This is a really good story, one of Ennis’ best. And if it’s an example of the TKO is publishing, then this imprint has a very successful future ahead of it.

Recent Reading: Holmes/Watson

I recently watched the Downey/Law Sherlock Holmes movie and thought about Holmes and Watson fiction that I’ve recently read. Below are two of them.

The Tea Master and the Detective by Aliette de Bodard. Holmes and Watson on a space station. The culture is Imperial Vietnamese. Holmes is a woman and Watson is a ship damaged in a recent rebellion who makes money by creating and selling tea mixtures that help people deal with the stresses of space travel. Powells link.

A Study in Honor by Claire O’Dell. Holmes and Watson in near future Washington D.C. during American Civil War II. Both Watson and Holmes are African American. Watson is a wounded vet returning from the war and struggling to get a medical job. She lost an arm in the war and has a very low grade bionic arm. Powells link
